On Sept 13th 2009, I performed 2 live sets on "The Return of High Voltage Circumcision" on WZBC in Newton, MA. The first set was pretty much what you'd expect. It was my normal set featuring tracks from v2. The second set however was completely improvised, using new clips and recordings in the works for v2.5 plus some audio borrowed from The Conet Project. From the projects homepage: "This Quadruple CD is an important historical reference work for research into this hitherto unreported and unknown field of espionage. The CDs contain 150 recordings spanning the last twenty years; taken from the private archives of dedicated shortwave radio listeners from around the world.". Ultimately these are recordings of number stations which I was facinated with at the time. (Lost ftw)
This improvised, second set gave synnack fans the first glimpse at the newer work coming on v2.5 and deepened my interest in the recording of spontaneous composition and sound design that crystalized recently into The Sessions Series. For this particular set, I did have a file built with a bunch of clips in it that I thought might work, but otherwise had no plan and 0 rehearsal.
If I recall this was also the first or second set with the APC40 which enabled me to pull off a number of new (to me) live dub-inspired mixing and fx techniques.
These sets have been available from the station's web site for some time, but today I cleaned them up with a bit of mastering and they are all together much more enjoyable in these versions. As usual with my radio performances, you'll also hear some interview bits featuring a glimpse into techniques and methodology and snarky, sarcastic humor.
These radio performances are often my favorites. There's not crowd of people staring at me waiting and hoping I'll play something they can dance to. It's an audience of "listeners" in way that doesn't happen often in the club settings I normally play in. Big thanks to DJ Deftly.D for having me on his show.
